About Handmade Soap:
What's the difference between handcrafted Simmons soap and commercial soaps?
Most commercial soap bars are actually synthetic detergents! Those that aren't are usually made using animal fats (tallow), and either will ordinarily contain synthetic colors and fragrances. The moisturizing and skin softening glycerin is removed from commercial soap and sold seperately.
Simmons special soaps are based on all natural, vegan ingredients. They are mild bars, high in olive oil, that still contain their natural glycerin. Other additions are certified organic grains, herbs, and spices, the scents all come from pure essential oils except for the synthetic blend, coconut, which is part of the fragrances we combine for the Cocoa Butter soap.
The only animal related products are the heavy cream (BGH - free) and honey that are added to the Milk & Honey soap.
Is there lye in the soap?
No.
In soap that is properly made and cured all the oil, water, and alkali (commonly known as lye), is transformed by a chemical reaction called saponification at about the rate of one molecule of glycerin to three molecules of soap. The end result is pure, mild soap.
What are the proportions of the oils in the soap?
Approximately 1/3 each olive oil, palm oil, and coconut oil. There is a little more olive and a little less coconut.

About Skeeter Skatter...
I hear Pennyroyal is unsafe for pregnant women, can I still use your Skeeter Skatter?
Among it's many uses, as an infusion Pennyroyal is used as an emmenagogue - i.e. to promote mestruation, and in large doses has been reputed to be an abortifactant. What's true about the tea is true about the oil, which is much stronger.
Of course you do not usually take the oil internally. Pregnant women should avoid pennyroyal in tea during pregnancy, and as we do absorb topical treatments, should not use much of it on their skin either.
When we formulated the Skeeter Skatter we took this into consideration, balanced against Pennyroyal's repellent properties and chose to use it in a very small amount... only .16% (or one 1600th of a part) of the formula. Our research and the advice of a master herbalist concluded this amount to be safe for anyone. Of course any pregnant woman who is still concerned can choose not to use it. It is definitely safe for nursing moms and babies.

How do I know my skin type?
First, not all of us have one specific skin type year in and year out. Oilyness and dryness can change with weather, hormonal cycles, diet, emotions, environmental sensitivities, disease and genetics. Many people get dry skin in the Winter and feel oily in the Summer. Adjust your soaps accordingly. You will probably find one or two products that you use most often.
Here's a simple test you can do to check your skin type:
Take a cotton ball and moisten it with Witch Hazel or or rubbing alcohol.
Rub the moist cotton along the side of your nose.
Wait ten minutes.
Repeat
Examine the second cotton ball. If the cotton is dirty, you tend to have oily skin.
If the cotton is clean, you tend to have dry skin.
